OrthoX’s first product is a high-fatigue-strength bone cement. This first generation product has been developed using proprietary technology, developed at the University of Notre Dame, OrthoX and Advanced Cerametrics and owned or licensed by OrthoX. This technology provides a new form of bone cement incorporating ceramic microfibers, specially manufactured using a patented manufacturing method, that offers significant improvements over existing cements on the market. The major improvement is increased fatigue resistance both over current cements on the market and earlier fiber reinforced cements.
Fatigue testing [U1] performed at the University of Notre Dame by Prof Ryan Roeder shows that these cements exhibit 100 times the fatigue life of existing cements. Furthermore, testing performed at OrthoX [U2] and Upstate Medical University [U3] has shown that the handling characteristics of the cements do not significantly differ from existing cements on the market. Therefore, the surgeon should need little or no time to adapt to using these cements.
